About the Safari

MedWish International and Peter’s Wildlife Safaris are excited to announce the upcoming 2020 Medical Brigade to Kenya, combining medical service and a wildlife safari in one. Read below to learn more. We hope you will join us!
Participating in a MedWish Medical Brigade is a wonderful way to give your time, talents, and compassion to those in need. The Brigade this June is a unique multifaceted trip that includes the humanitarian mission of a medical service brigade, in addition to a traditional African safari and opportunities to learn about wildlife and community conservation. There is no doubt that this Brigade will be a memorable experience.

Medical professionals and lay volunteers are welcome on this Brigade. Both will have the opportunity to serve the Talek community through the clinic days.

If you would like to join us, please review this information carefully, complete your registration form, and submit it along with your deposit to reserve your place. Registration closes on Sunday, March 1st. Registration is first come first serve and will close once the trip reaches capacity.

About Kenya

Kenya is an Eastern African nation bordered by the Indian Ocean, Ethiopia, Sudan, and Tanzania. It is five times the size of Ohio and its climate varies from tropical along the coast to arid in the interior. It is home to over 47.5 million people, 43.4% of whom live below the poverty line. There is a high rate of HIV/AIDS (est. 1.6 million people) and only .2 physicians per 1,000 people in the nation. The unemployment rate is 40%, with the majority of the working population, 49.3%, in the service industry, 18% in industry, and 32.7% in agriculture.

ABout Masai Mara

The Maasai Mara National Reserve is a vast preserved savannah wilderness along the Tanzanian border in Kenya. It possesses a grassy landscape and is crossed by the Mara and Talek rivers. Animals that can be found in this reserve include cheetahs, lions, elephants, zebras, and hippos. Wildebeest can also be found here during their annual migration. Villages of the local Maasai people can also be found in the surrounding area.

ABOUT TALEK & THE TALEK CLINIC

The Talek Community Health Center is located near one of the entrances to the Maasai Mara National Reserve. It provides services for roughly 12,000 patients per year, some coming from neighboring Tanzania. The clinic’s structure is well set with a four-bed in-patient ward, four-bed maternity ward, a consultation room for out-patients, a consultation room for those with infectious diseases, lab, and a pharmacy. Medical supplies from MedWish were recently brought to the Talek Clinic by participants of Peter’s Wildlife Safaris.

ABOUT MEDWISH

MedWish International is a nonprofit organization that saves lives and the environment by repurposing discarded medical supplies and equipment while providing humanitarian aid to individuals and organizations that administer care in developing countries.

MedWish diverts roughly 500,000 pounds of medical surplus from our local landfills every year. This is done with the support of approximately 116 local hospitals and healthcare providers, who generously donate medical supplies and equipment to MedWish.

Nearly 3,000 volunteers support MedWish annually and help sort through these donated supplies. MedWish is also a training site for individuals with special needs that participate in MedWish’s Skill Building Program.

MedWish’s founder was inspired to found MedWish after serving as an intern in a surgical clinic in Nigeria. International Medical Brigades have therefore been part of MedWish since its inception. Past Brigades have been to El Salvador, Peru, Guatemala, and Nicaragua.
